When Everything Falls Apart — And God Still Feels Far Away
There is a particular kind of pain that doesn't have a name. It's not the sharp sting of sudden loss. It's the slow, quiet ache of showing up to God every day — reading your Bible, praying, going through the motions — and feeling like He isn't there. Like your prayers hit the ceiling and come right back down.
If that's where you are right now, I need you to hear this: you are not broken, and God has not moved.
What the Silence Actually Means
The Psalms are full of men and women who felt exactly what you feel. David — a man after God's own heart — wrote "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Psalm 22:1). He didn't whisper it privately. He wrote it down. He cried it out. And God called it Scripture.
Lament is not a lack of faith. Lament is faith — it's the act of bringing your broken, confused, exhausted heart to the only One who can hold it. The silence you're experiencing in this season is not proof that God is absent. It may be proof that He is doing something in you that requires stillness.
Isaiah 45:15 says, "Truly you are a God who hides himself." Even the prophet knew seasons of hiddenness. But hiddenness is not abandonment. God hides himself in the same way a surgeon works quietly — not because he doesn't care, but because the work he is doing requires focus, precision, and trust from the patient.
What to Do When You Can't Feel Him
Stop trying to manufacture a feeling. Feelings are real, but they are not always reliable guides to truth. What is reliable is the Word of God — and the Word says He will never leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). You don't have to feel that for it to be true.
Come to God in lament. Open your Bible to Psalm 42, 88, or 139 and just read it out loud. Let someone else's words carry you when you don't have your own. Tell God exactly how you feel — even if it sounds like "I don't even know if you're listening." He can handle it.
And find someone safe to walk with you. Biblical counseling exists for this exact moment — not when you have it all together, but when you don't.
📖 Verse to Anchor You
"We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure."
— Hebrews 6:19
✏️ Journal Reflection Questions
- When did you last feel close to God? What was happening in your life during that season?
- What does the silence feel like for you right now — is it loneliness, confusion, anger, or something else?
- Have you ever brought your real feelings to God, or have you been performing for Him? What would honest prayer look like for you?
- Is there something God might be asking you to release, trust, or wait on in this season?
🙏 Prayer
Father, I don't always feel You — but I choose to trust that You are here. I bring You my confusion, my exhaustion, and my honest heart. I don't want to perform for You. I want to know You. Teach me to lament well. Teach me to wait on You without running away. Be the anchor my soul needs today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
