What Biblical Counseling Is β€” And Why It's Different From Therapy
Most people who find their way to Life Anchor Center have one of two reactions when they hear the words "biblical counseling." Either they have never heard of it before and have questions — or they have heard something about it and have concerns. Both are completely fair. This post is for both of you.
Let me be honest and clear about what biblical counseling is, what it isn't, and who it is actually for.

It's Not What You Might Think

Biblical counseling is not someone sitting across from you with a Bible, telling you to pray more and try harder. It is not a list of rules. It is not a replacement for medication when medication is medically necessary. It is not a system that dismisses your pain or tells you that struggling means you lack faith.
Biblical counseling is the careful, compassionate work of helping a person understand themselves — their patterns, their beliefs, their relationships, and their heart — through the lens of Scripture. It starts with the conviction that God's Word is sufficient for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3) and that real, lasting change happens from the inside out, not the outside in.

How It Differs From Traditional Therapy

Traditional therapy draws its framework primarily from psychological theory — which can be helpful and is not without value. Biblical counseling draws its primary framework from Scripture while still engaging the whole person — emotionally, relationally, physically, and spiritually.
The biggest difference is this: therapy often asks "how does this make you feel and how can we cope?" Biblical counseling asks "what do you believe, what does Scripture say about that belief, and how can we align your heart with truth?" One works on managing the surface. The other goes after the root.

Who Biblical Counseling Is For

Biblical counseling is for anyone who wants to understand themselves through the truth of God's Word. It is for the woman drowning in anxiety who has tried everything and still can't find peace. It is for the couple whose marriage is fracturing under the weight of unspoken things. It is for the man who keeps repeating the same patterns and is finally ready to ask why. It is for someone coming out of a spiritually harmful environment who needs to rebuild their understanding of who God actually is.
At Life Anchor Center, sessions are grounded in Reformed theology — meaning we believe in the sovereignty of God, the sufficiency of Scripture, and the power of the gospel to actually change people. Not manage them. Change them.

What a Session With Marisely Looks Like

We start with your story. No agenda, no performance required — just honesty. From there, we work together through what Scripture says about what you're facing, what your heart has believed (often without realizing it), and what real change could look like for you. Sessions are available one-on-one, for couples, and online for clients nationwide.
You don't have to have it together to start. You just have to be willing to show up.

πŸ“– Verse to Anchor You

"His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence."
— 2 Peter 1:3

✏️ Journal Reflection Questions

  1. What has held you back from seeking counseling in the past — fear, pride, cost, or something else?
  2. What would you most want a counselor to understand about your situation before you even walked in the door?
  3. Do you believe that Scripture is sufficient to address what you are going through? What makes that easy or hard to accept?
  4. What would "real change" look like in your life — not just coping, but actually being different?
  5. Is there someone in your life who might benefit from knowing that biblical counseling exists?

πŸ™ Prayer

Lord, I have carried this long enough on my own. I don't always know how to ask for help, but I am asking now. Lead me to the right people, the right words, and the right truth for this season. Give me the courage to be honest — with You, with myself, and with someone safe. I believe Your Word is enough. Help me live like I believe it. In Jesus' name, Amen.
